For most people with a healthy immune system, the human papillomavirus virus (HPV) disappears from the body within one to three days. However, there are at least 15 high-risk strains of the disease that can cause cancer.
The medical community is urging men and women to protect themselves from particular sexual behaviours that can trigger an HPV form of cancer.
If you are sexually active and over the age of 60 you may be particularly vulnerable.
